Gmail sending limits¶
Google limits how many emails a Gmail account can send, to prevent abuse. If you go over the limit, or send many messages that can't be delivered, Google can temporarily lock your account for sending.
The limits¶
| Account type | Recipients per 24 hours (approx.) |
|---|---|
Free Gmail (@gmail.com) |
500 |
| Google Workspace (formerly G Suite / Google Apps) | 2,000 |
Every recipient counts, including people in To, Cc and Bcc. Google may change these limits, so check Google's own help pages for the latest figures.
Do these limits apply to Flashissue?¶
Only emails that Flashissue sends through your Gmail account count against these limits. That happens when you send from your own Google address and default name to no more than your Gmail sending threshold (currently 500 recipients by default). Changing the From address or From name sends from Flashissue's servers instead. See How Flashissue delivers your email for the full rules.
Our recommendation¶
For emails that go out through your Gmail account, keep each newsletter to about 250 recipients per 24 hours. That leaves room for your everyday Gmail use.
Avoid getting locked out¶
- Keep your lists clean. Remove addresses that bounce and never use purchased lists.
- Send a test to yourself before every large send.
- If your account does get locked, it's usually lifted automatically within 24 hours. See My Gmail account is locked.
