My Gmail account is locked

If Google sees unusual activity on your account, it may temporarily block access or sending. This usually clears by itself within a minute to 24 hours.

Common causes

  • Sending a lot of email directly through Gmail in a short time. See Gmail sending limits.
  • Sending many emails that bounce.
  • Downloading lots of mail through POP or IMAP very quickly.
  • Other apps or extensions that sign in to your account automatically.
  • Having Gmail open in many tabs or windows at once.

What to do

  1. Wait up to 24 hours.
  2. Close any extra Gmail tabs, and remove apps or extensions you don't use.
  3. See Google's own help on locked or suspended accounts.
  4. When you're back in, clean up your list to reduce bounces.
